    Anthonij Rupert Merlot

    Merlot 2021

The seduction begins with dark fruitcake on the nose, with a wisp, or mere suggestion, of dried lavender florality.
Velvety, sleek, supple, polished and glossy entry to the mouth. Confident and poised. An abundance of rich fruitcake, tobacco leaf, plum and cedar spice mingle happily. The palate is nuanced, layered and complex: simultaneously seductive and engaging but not ponderous. Rewardingly succulent with seamlessly integrated oak, it is restrained, refined and elegantly genteel with a lingering farewell. Beautifully harmonious and composed to the end.

    Merlot 2020

Bold spicy plum pudding, black cherry and dark chocolate aromatics. The palate is all about texture: rounded, plush and lissom – but with a vibrant spicy edge. The rich, ripe plum and dark fruit promised by the nose is delivered in the mouth, along with deep cocoa powder and chocolate flavour. Alluring and more serious than it initially appears, the wine has stature and presence courtesy of its time in barrel. Yet the oak doesn’t dominate, it’s seamlessly integrated and fine, lending layers and complexity. Lovely length of flavour.

    Merlot 2019

The universal appeal of chocolate is allied to an understated violet perfume and some deeper, inky, earthy notes, making for a seductive mix. Texture informs the palate: rounded on entry, soft, lush and succulent. Only then do the rich cocoa and dark black, blue and cherry fruit notes announce their presence, along with a squeeze of chalky but fine tannin. Elegant, refined and poised, the palate displays lovely harmony of fruit and oak in a deliciously long, supple and silky package. It feels effortless but is supremely rewarding in the pleasure stakes.

    Merlot 2018

Bold purple plums, black cherries and perfume with subtle edge of cut flower stems on the nose. The palate is taut, needing a bit of time and air to reveal its strata of spicy purple and black berry fruits. There’s an oak edge which lends both spice and structure to the wine while acidity adds freshness and piquancy. Savoury, tangy and tasty with a long tail, it will reward patience.

Black Forest gateau aromas and deep plum aromas with spice hints are present on the nose. The palate is plush and enveloping, with black cherry, plum, and understated spice notes. rounded, soft, and velvety textured, but with a core of ripe, dark fruit. The oak is beautifully integrated and supportive without being dominant. Elegant, refined, and well structured, the wine is a good reflection of an excellent vintage, despite being in the middle of a drought. Long and rewarding tail.

    Merlot 2016

Tempting herb notes overlay riper plum and berry fruit aromas. In the mouth hedgerow fruit or berries and plum flavours are joined by deeper, darker inky nuances of cocoa and cedar. A deceptively soft textured palate also shows intensity with spice and earthiness and some powerful muscularity from time in oak. The tannins are integrated and add structure and grip as well as a dry, oak element to the long fruited tail.
Complex and delightful, will benefit from further ageing.

Seductive meaty black fruit aromas with traces of white pepper and a shy hint of smoke. Appealing sour plum, black cherry and soy sauce flavour makes for a deliciously savoury mouthful. A toned, sculpted frame of well-knit oak balances bright spice and succulence. The palate is plush and silky while also demonstrating leashed power and presence. Beautifully restrained and statuesque with a darkly delicious aftertaste.

    Merlot 2014

Intriguing complex nose of shy perfume, red and black fruit and faint spice note with even a hint of licorice in the mix.

On the palate, the first sensation is textural – velvety, smooth and silky. Spicy with blackberries, rich fruitcake and understated touch of tobacco leaf. There’s a soft squeeze of dry tannin without the wine being grippy or astringent. Lovely integration of oak and fruit which will aid ageing. Superbly poised and balanced with lovely length. Elegance retained to the end.

    Vintage Notes

The 2021 harvest in Franschhoek and Darling can best be described as “late, slow, and steady.” A cold, wet winter provided excellent dormancy for the vines and replenished water reserves ahead of the growing season. The cool conditions carried through into spring, leading to a delayed but even bud break, flowering, and fruit set. A moderate summer further extended the ripening period, pushing harvest about two weeks later than usual. February, typically the warmest month, was unexpectedly cool, allowing the grapes to ripen gradually while retaining fresh acidity and vibrant flavors. The result is an exceptional vintage producing outstanding wines that are approachable yet have wonderful ageing potential.

    Winemaking

Our 2021 Merlot grapes were carefully hand-picked and placed into small lug boxes before being transported to the cellar in refrigerated trucks to preserve their freshness. Upon arrival, the whole berries go through a thorough double-sorting process, including optical sorting, and are gently gravity-fed into wooden fermenters. Each parcel undergoes a cold soak for a few days before gradually being warmed for a natural fermentation to take place. After fermentation, the wine is left on the skins for an extended 5-day maceration period to extract even more depth and colour. The wine is then matured for 24 months in 40% new French oak barriques, bottled, and aged in the bottle for an additional three years. The grapes for this Merlot are sourced from our vineyards planted on L’Ormarins in Franschhoek and Rooderust in Darling.

    Vintage Notes

The 2020 Merlot harvest in Franschhoek brought a renewed sense of optimism. After the prolonged drought years, increased rainfall provided much-needed relief to the vineyards, leading to improved vine health and larger yields compared to 2019. Moderate temperatures during the ripening period allowed for slow, even maturation, preserving fresh aromatics and depth of flavour. The resulting wines show excellent balance, with ripe tannins, refined structure, and a vibrant fruit profile. With it’s richness an d complexity, the 2020 vintage stands out as one of the most promising years for Merlot in South Africa.

    Vintage Notes

The 2019 Merlot vintage in Franschhoek marked a significant turnaround from the tough conditions of previous years. After enduring three years of intense drought, the vineyards bounced back, resulting in a much higher yield compared to 2018. Although the fluctuating weather during the crucial flowering and fruit set in October caused some uneven ripening, the overall growing season was marked by moderate conditions that encouraged strong vine growth and lush canopies. The slightly cooler temperatures leading up to harvest allowed the grapes to develop beautifully, with a great balance of acidity and exceptional flavors.

    Vintage Notes

Due to a prolonged drought that was possibly the worst in a century’s worth of records, the harvest season of 2018 was especially challenging. The dry weather that persisted throughout the season had some positive effects, namely that the vines were in better health and there were either fewer or no instances of pests and diseases recorded. Because of the stress caused by a lack of water, the berries were significantly smaller than usual, which led to a reduced harvest. Smaller berries offer higher colour and flavour intensity, and the 2018 vintage is expected to be of high quality due to the milder temperatures during harvest.
